132,000 lb stamping press installation in South Carolina

Moving a Meca DACH-300 press through a modified building opening before raising it into position with a 400-ton gantry.

Getting a 132,000 lb press through the building and into final position

Our team in the USA installed a Meca DACH-300 stamping press for a steel and aluminium food-can and tray provider. The press weighed 132,000 lb and measured 240 in x 187 in x 112 in. It was first offloaded outside and moved onto a platform built next to the building, then skated inside through an opening created by removing a section of the building’s side.

Heavy rigging through a modified access route, then 400-ton gantry installation

Inside the building, an 80k rigger lift and two knuckle booms were used to move the press through the facility. The route included several turns, so the heavy-haul dollies had to be reset a number of times. A 400-ton gantry system then rigged the press upright and secured it in its designated position, and four isolating pads were bolted to its base.

The machinery installation scope also covered the decoiler and the rail to the upright platform for material handling. Four riggers and technicians completed the eight-day programme, which was mechanical only, with no electrical or piping work, and followed strict safety protocols throughout.

Press installed in eight days with no reported safety incidents

The stamping press was moved through the facility, raised upright and secured in its designated position, with the decoiler and material-handling rail also installed. No health or safety incidents were reported during the eight-day programme.

Need to know more?

How was the press moved into the building?
A section of the building’s side was removed and a sturdy platform constructed so the press could be skated inside.
Why were the heavy-haul dollies reset several times?
The route through the facility included a few turns, so the team paused several times to reset the heavy-haul dollies as the press changed direction.
