Maintenance work on industrial equipment is planned around the time the machine can be stopped. Beck & Pollitzer carries out planned maintenance, shutdown work, repairs and specialist modifications on equipment that is already in service, from single assets to complete production lines.
Manufacturers such as Elval and SSAB have used our teams for shutdown maintenance and revamps. On a separate project, in one week on glass-manufacturing equipment, our team repainted nine heating and 21 cooling chambers, replaced worn conveyor components and completed 3,250 project hours.
Work can be booked as a single intervention or as a recurring shutdown programme.
Shutdown, repair, modification and support
The work below covers planned intervention, repair, modification and technical support for machinery already in service.

Planned maintenance & shutdown support
Planned interventions are scheduled into shutdown windows or other periods when equipment is released from production. On a multi-contractor site, work zones, movement routes and task sequence are agreed up front, with isolations, permits and supervision planned through our shutdown work-zone control and supervision.
- Planned machinery maintenance
- Shutdown maintenance support
- Millwright and mechanical fitter labour
- Work-package and resource scheduling
- Repeat annual shutdown campaigns
- Post-maintenance handover

Inspection, repair & component replacement
Maintenance work includes inspection of mechanical components, replacement of worn or damaged parts and corrective work found during the stoppage. Fault finding and accuracy checks, including ballbar testing on CNC machines, are part of the scope. Where dimensional checks or alignment verification are needed after repairs, our measurement and verification team can support them.
- Mechanical condition checks
- Fault finding and diagnosis
- Bearing, roller, shaft and belt replacement
- Drive-train component replacement
- Roller re-levelling and alignment
- Heat-resistant repainting of chamber surfaces

Machinery modification & retrofit
Existing machinery is modified to suit a revised process, a replacement component or a changed site condition. Shutdown scopes have included loader rail modifications, new overhead conductors, removal of redundant cabling and replacement of casing and spare parts on production lines. Where several work areas and subcontractors run at once, coordination of simultaneous work areas and subcontractors keeps them to the shutdown schedule.
- Specialist machinery modification
- Mechanical alterations and retrofit work
- Equipment and robot replacement
- Supporting steelwork modifications
- Redundant cabling and services removal
- Reinstallation following modification

Ongoing technical & operational support
Support can continue after installation or a major project where the client needs extra engineering resource around operating equipment. This can include maintenance assistance, verification checks and defined follow-on work. Where the requirement becomes a new installation or a major equipment replacement, the work moves to our installation and commissioning teams.
- Post-installation maintenance support
- Follow-on mechanical support
- Defined verification checks
- Site-based technical assistance
- Planned follow-up interventions
- Support during production changes and upgrades
Wider maintenance & support services
The scope can be a single repair or a multi-week shutdown campaign across several machines.

Need to know more?
Planned mechanical maintenance, shutdown work, inspection and component replacement, fault finding, specialist machinery modification and follow-on support for equipment already in service. The work package is set by the machinery, the site and the time available.
Yes. Work is grouped into a defined package, with labour, access and handover planned against the shutdown window. One aluminium rolling client had its mill rolls exchanged within six days during each winter shutdown, repeated for four consecutive years.
Yes. Maintenance support can include fault finding, accuracy checks such as ballbar testing, and the decommissioning and re-commissioning of CNC-controlled machinery and production lines.
Non-essential tasks are rescheduled, work zones are segregated and movement routes are agreed so teams do not overlap. A full-time safety coordinator can be on site for the duration of the shutdown.
Teams are drawn from project managers, supervisors, millwrights, mechanical fitters, electricians, pipefitters, riggers and welders, depending on the work package. The comprehensive guide to millwrights: definition, role and importance.
Maintenance & Support covers equipment already in service, including planned intervention, repair and modification. Machinery Installation covers positioning, assembly, connection and commissioning support for equipment being installed or reinstalled.
