Replacing the main ram housing and accessory cylinders on a 5,100-ton aluminium extrusion press in Texas within a three-week deadline.

The Challenge
Replacing a major press assembly within a three-week production window
The aluminium manufacturer needed the main ram housing and accessory cylinders replaced on a 5,100-ton extrusion press in Texas within a three-week deadline. The existing housing had to be removed and replaced with a new pre-assembled unit, while an inclined ramp and the weight of the housing created additional handling challenges.
Our Solution
Seventeen-person team and 400-ton gantry used for dismantling and replacement
A 17-person team of riggers, millwrights and engineers carried out the machinery replacement, dismantling the existing ram housing and accessory cylinders and installing the new pre-assembled housing and cylinder package. A 400-ton gantry handled the heavy lifting, and dedicated Health & Safety staff developed safety strategies for the inclined ramp and the weight of the housing.
